Merck Scientists Visit IMPM to Explore Collaborative Research Opportunities

Dr NGWEWONDO Adela epse NGWA, a research officer at CRPMT and a recipient of a Merck Germany Company grant, welcomed two esteemed Merck research scientists on May 10th, 2023. The purpose of their visit was to discuss how researchers living in endemic regions can actively participate in collaborative research efforts aimed at eliminating Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs).

During the meeting, Dr NGWEWONDO Adela épse NGWA presented on the project funded by Merck and highlighted its focus on the impact of Schistosoma haematobium eggs on the ovarian cell microenvironment and the development of Female Genital Schistosomiasis (FGS). This neglected aspect of global health, specifically infertility caused by the parasite, has long been speculated and her work aims to address this issue at the molecular level. The project aspires to develop preventive immuno-therapies for this pathology.

During the visit, the Merck scientists were given a comprehensive tour of the laboratory where the ongoing project is being carried out. The visit provided an excellent opportunity for knowledge exchange and discussions on potential collaborations between researchers in endemic regions and Merck.

By fostering dialogue and collaboration, this visit enhances the collective efforts to combat NTDs and improve global health outcomes. The dedication of researchers like Dr NGWEWONDO Adela épse NGWA and the support from industry leaders like Merck are vital in accelerating progress toward the elimination of these neglected diseases.
